The beginnings – a passion for research and technological innovation
S.E.I. srl was founded in the late ‘80s by Mr. Andrea Corsi, an expert designer of automation systems and machinery for stone processing who had always been nurturing the dream of setting up a company entirely devoted to scientific research and technological innovation.
The vision that lies at the heart of the company is the belief that all problems which inhibit the growth of the stone industry can be solved through the development of still unexplored technological solutions.
Indeed, the early S.E.I. outlined a new approach to the longstanding issues in the field, launching a series of original devices which marked a clean break with the past. These first S.E.I. inventions even exceeded the expectations of their users, improving productivity and keeping production costs down at their factories.
Soon after these successes, Mr. Corsi decided to carry out an in-depth study into how fragile stone could be effectively strengthened. At that time, stone processors dealing in marble, breccia and onyx had to accept that a large part of the material would break from the initial stages of working. Even though some of them had already realized that synthetic resins represented an excellent means for the reinforcement and restoration of faulty slabs, nobody could treat their materials with resin on an industrial scale. The use of synthetic resins was far from easy indeed, because these chemical products had to be poured onto thoroughly dry slabs and it could take over 48 hours for them to set and harden.
Mr. Corsi’s research culminated in the construction of specialized ovens to dry the stone and accelerate the resin hardening. There was still a long way to go before a really valid comprehensive equipment was created. However, these ovens played a pivotal role in enabling Mr. Corsi to recognize the key factors in the treatment of stone with resin.
A revolutionary technology
The next crucial step was the launch of an automated production line characterized by a systematic operating system to carry out the entire process. It was a closed-cycle plant whose method of working involved the slabs transported on steel trays undergoing a sequence of drying, mesh backing or resin coating and resin hardening at workstations. The attachment of a sheet of fibreglass mesh with resin to the back of the slabs made it possible to repair and strengthen fractured material. Through resin coating the presence of cracks and holes on the surface of slabs could be hidden. The application of layer of resin also offered the opportunity to enhance the colour of the stone and give a uniform appearance to the background of the slabs.
In 1991, rumours of the existence of a revolutionary “Linea di Resinatura” plant began to spread and attracted masses of visitors to Carrara. No matter how sceptical these people were, once they saw the plant running, they all had to admit that it worked great. Needless to say, the initial curiosity and interest changed into desire to have a plant like that or even superior in productive capacity and level of automation.
In the mid ‘90s the increasingly popular futuristic “S.E.I. Resin Lines” had become a dream for most European stone processors enticed by the exciting prospect to turn large quantities of defective stone into sturdy beautiful slabs. This brought S.E.I. to receive tens of orders, and so it was that the company started designing customized plants to meet the individual requirements of each of its clients.
With the 21st century Resin Lines seeped into the collective imagination as an essential part of the stone processing equipment. With the aim of meeting the rising diversified demand S.E.I. launched a number of new versions different in layout configuration, size, standard kit and production capacity.
At the end of the first decade of 2000s the S.E.I.’s range of Resin Lines included over 50 models and a vast array of accessories to maximize the level of automation and improve the quality of the finished product.
Between 2013 and 2014 S.E.I. chose to mark a new conception of Resin Treatment of stone through the launch of its latest generation Resin Lines. These plants represent a relevant step to elevate the world’s quality standards, allowing their users to achieve improved levels of perfection which were unattainable with old analogue technologies.
